A PROBLEM WE CANNOT AFFORD TO IGNORE

One in four Texans lack health insurance—8 million people, including millions of self-employed and full-time workers. In the Houston metropolitan area alone, more than 1 million people are uninsured and without access to adequate health care.

WE ALL PAY

This problem has serious consequences to Harris County taxpayers because being uninsured does not keep people from becoming ill. Illnesses that could have been treated early can become life threatening, forcing people into emergency rooms, the more expensive places to obtain health care. These costs are passed along to the rest of us, resulting in higher insurance premiums, as well as increasing property and sales taxes.
